Nestled in the heart of Manchester, Hotel Gotham is not just a luxurious destination; it's a piece of architectural history. Originally designed by the renowned Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1928, this iconic building served as the headquarters for the Midland Bank. With its stunning façade and intricate details, it stands as a testament to Lutyens' remarkable vision and expertise. It is Lutyens' major work in Manchester and was designated a Grade II listed building in 1974.
Architecture
Sir Edwin Lutyens, one of Britain’s most celebrated architects, is known for his ability to blend traditional and contemporary styles. A castle-like Art Deco building, surrounded by roads on all four sides, the architects for the former bank were Lutyens in collaboration with Whinney, Son & Austen Hall and it was built between 1933 and 1935 by J. Gerrard & Sons of Swinton and features carvings by the local sculptor John Ashton Floyd. It is constructed of Portland stone around a steel frame. Its neoclassical design is unusual for Manchester; the style perhaps more suited to the architecture of Liverpool, as most of Manchester's buildings are Neogothic. Each corner of the building tells a story of craftsmanship and creativity, making it a landmark that captures the essence of Manchester’s rich architectural heritage.
A Transformation into luxury
In 2015, this historic gem was reborn as Hotel Gotham, merging its storied past with modern luxury. The hotel retains many original features, from the ornate ceilings to the stunning vault that now serves as our exclusive events space.
